Dr. Garlitz's practice was established in Hickory in 1972 to provide the highest quality orthodontic care possible for people of all ages, based on each individual’s wants and needs.
Dr. Garlitz's educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Science degree form the University of Notre Dame in 1962
- Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree in Dentistry from the University of Maryland in 1966.
- Internship in Oral Surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore in 1967
- Served two years in the U.S. Air Force as an Oral Surgeon from 1967 to 1969
- Master of Dental Science degree in Orthodontics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972
- Keeps current with leading-edge treatment and rapid changes that continually occur in dentistry and orthodontics by attending and participating in an average of 20 days of continuing education courses and seminars each year.

- Chairman of Rotary/Lenoir Rhyne Basketball Classic for 10 years
- Help to establish Rotary scholarship program
- Coached youth basketall teams at recreation and AAU levels.
Dr. Garlitz and his wife, Barbara, and have five children: Jennifer, Kevin, Kyle, Cristopher and Todd. They also have three grandsons and three granddaughters: Dane and Kiera, Jack and Julia, Ellis and Charlie
